Bloomington Woman Pleads Guilty To Killing Husband

Last updated on Friday, October 14, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington woman has plead guilty to manslaughter in husband’s shooting death.

Kirby admitted she shot her husband four times during an argument the afternoon of September 26, 2015 at the couple's home on San Juan Drive. The couple's two toddlers witnessed the shooting.

Kirby told police she ran to a bedroom, locked the door, retrieved a .380 Ruger, chambered a bullet and placed the gun in her pants pocket.

When she emerged, Taylor claims that during that argument her husband approached her with clenched fists. She was afraid and shot him four times. Police were suspicious of Kirby's version of events, because one of the bullets was fired into 26-year-old Justin Kirby's back.

When rescue crews arrived they found Justin Kirby dead on a front patio.

At the scene, Taylor Kirby admitted to shooting her husband and told police the gun was on a kitchen counter.

On Thursday morning, the charge against 24-year-old Taylor Kirby was amended from murder to voluntary manslaughter, the killing of another person under the sudden heat of anger.

In a negotiated plea agreement, she will face a maximum 17-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter and another five years for a sentence enhancement because a handgun was used in the crime. She has been held without bond at the Monroe County Jail since her arrest the day of the murder. Monroe Circuit Judge Marc Kellams will sentence her on December 1.
