Last updated on Friday, October 21, 2016

(INDIANAPOLIS) - As high schools and colleges are developing hot young talent among the legendary Indianapolis jazz scene, the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation will honor the contributions of Bloomington High School North Director of Bands Janis Stockhouse at the annual Jazz Legacy Showcase on Thursday, November 17 at Indiana Landmarks Center (1201 Central Ave.) at 7 p.m.

Stockhouse will receive the Dr. David Baker Indiana Jazz Educator of the Year Award and student musicians will share the spotlight with Indianapolis jazz professionals. Four students from area colleges and universities will receive $1,000 IJF scholarships and the opportunity to play alongside their mentors and luminaries. Doug Housemeyer of WICR 88.7 FM will emcee.

Stockhouse, who has been at Bloomington High School North for more than 30 years, leads student ensembles that have performed widely, has garnered numerous awards and has produced a bevy of professional performers, educators and music-industry professionals. She is past president of the Indiana Jazz Educators Association and a noted author and educator.

"The Jazz Legacy Showcase is an annual highlight for music lovers and those who treasure Central Indiana's cultural heritage," said IJF President Katherine Nagler. "We get to hear the best up-and-coming players - our scholarship recipients - play alongside the artists who have inspired and mentored them. We're excited to be at the Indiana Landmarks Center for the first time, and to unveil a special creation by Rita Spalding, commissioned by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation."
