(BLOOMINGTON) - A car left running for more than five hours prompted the evacuation of an apartment complex on North Walnut Street after carbon monoxide levels soared.
The Bloomington Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at 602 North Walnut St. at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
When firefighters arrived they found water running out of the building's garage.
According to Bloomington Fire Department Sgt. Brandon Hudson, the sprinkler system in the building's first-floor garage was activated by a running vehicle. Investigators determined that a resident had left the car running since 8:30 p.m. Monday.
According to Hudson, carbon monoxide levels reached 170 parts per million in the garage, 320 parts per million on the building's second floor and 280 parts per million on the third floor.
Hudson says those levels had the potential of causing headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, but none of the residents reported any symptoms.
While on the scene, at 1:53 a.m., a firefighter noticed a fire alarm activated at 601 North Walnut Street. Heavy smoke was coming from a recessed dumpster area. Half of the crew extinguished the dumpster fire, while other firefighters remained at the apartment.
