(BEDFORD) - Two men were arrested after one of them took a car from the place of his employment, fled from police and rammed two police vehicles early Monday morning.
Bedford Police arrested 29-year-old William Thompson, of Bedford, on charges of battery with a deadly weapon, battery on a police officer, resisting arrest by fleeing in a vehicle, resisting arrest by force, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, criminal recklessness, possession of stolen property, possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle while intoxicated on a controlled substance, identity deception, habitual traffic offender, and wanted on a warrant for failure to appear.
Jeffery Owens, 26, of Harrodsburg, was arrested on a warrant in another county and resisting arrest.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, an officer stopped the 2005 Chrysler, Thompson was driving at 12:30 a.m. on Becky Skillman Way.
After speaking with Thompson and his two passengers, the officer went back to his police vehicle to run their driver's license. That is when Thompson fled the scene.
The pursuit took off north on Becky Skillman Way, onto John Williams Boulevard, crossed to Bell Back Road and onto Fifth Street and then north on Ind. 37 at a high-rate of speed.
"On Ind. 37, Mr. Thompson slammed on his brakes," Chief Parsley added. "The police vehicle veered around the vehicle and that is when Mr. Thompson rammed into the police car."
Thompson then turned into the median and crashed into the guardrail.
"That is when a second officer arrived on the scene and got behind the car blocking it's path," Chief Parsley added.
"As that officer was getting out of their vehicle, Mr. Thompson rammed the second police car causing the police vehicle door to knock the officer to the ground," Chief Parsley says."At that time the other officer saw the back up light come on the suspects vehicle and feared the driver was going to run over the downed officer. So they pulled their vehicle around to block the suspect's path."
Officers then got Thompson, who was being combative out of the vehicle and had to force him to the ground.
The passenger, Owens, was also combative and had to be Tased.
Neither Thompson or Owen would cooperate with police nor identify themselves
Thompson was taken to a local hospital for a blood-drawn and police learned his true identity and learned both men were wanted on warrants.
Police also discovered the car Thompson was driving, was taken from an auto repair shop in Bloomington where Thompson worked - without the owners permission.
Both officers suffered minor injuries and were treated and released at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.
