(BEDFORD) - Two people were arrested Wednesday after a report of a toddler playing unsupervised in the roadway.
Bedford Police were called to the 700 block of Sixth Street at 6:14 p.m. after a report of a small child wandering around the area with no one around.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, witnesses watched the child for about 20 minutes to see if anyone would come to get him, but no one did.
Police requested an official from the Department of Child Services to come to the scene.
While officials were on the scene, Wendy Krause walked around a corner of a building and told police she and her husband were watching their two children and didn't realize one of them had wandered off.
Police found the second child around the corner of the building. Parsley says the children were 3-and 4 -years-old.
Police arrested 40-year-old Wendy Krause (also known as Wendy Fisher), on a charge of neglect of a dependent.
Police then went to Wendy and 29-year-old Steven Krause's home at 618 G Street to speak to Steven. There he was asked to step outside to discuss the situation and he complied. Soon after he was told he was being arrested for neglect of a dependent.
As police began to put Steven in handcuffs he became uncooperative and verbally abusive. He then attempted to pull away from the officers. Parsley says officers had to force Steven to the ground until they could regain control.
"Once he calmed down, officers escorted him to police vehicle," Parsley added. "And again he became combative, kicking at the officers. He was again taken to the ground by force, suffering a laceration on his head."
An IU Health Hospital ambulance was called to the scene and transported Steven to the hospital for treatment. He was released and then transported to jail. He was also charged with resisting arrest by force.
Parsley says DCS would not be releasing the children back to Wendy and Steven, and instead released them to a family member.
