(BLOOMINGTON) - Young Americans for Freedom at Indiana University in partnership with the Gamma-Kappa chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon is proud to organize the 9/11: Never Forget Project on campus Friday in historic Dunn Meadow from 10 a.m. till 9 p.m.
Through this initiative, which is the largest nationwide campus activism project of its kind, students at schools across the country annually display 2,997 American flags to remember those murdered at the hands of radical Islamists more than a decade ago.
"Even though these events precede the memories of many students on our campus, we all recognize the cultural and political importance of 9/11," event organizer and Young Americans for Freedom at Indiana University Chairman Andrew Ireland said. "At a time when the threat of global terror is stronger than ever, it is important that we take this opportunity to honor the lives lost."
"This is a chance for students of all backgrounds to come together and reflect on what unites us as a people," Ireland notes. "We're proud to host this event for its third year on our campus and look forward to interacting with hundreds of students later this week."
More than 200 campuses participate in this project each year, this year being no exception, and its popularity continues to increase. Since 2003, 9.7 million flags have been placed in the ground as part of YAF's iconic project.
This September marks 15 years since the tragic terror attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Students in Young Americans for Freedom at Indiana University understand the significance of 9/11 and hope to raise awareness about the importance of combating terrorism, especially as threats, including ISIL, continue to rise around the world.
