(BEDFORD) - Star Wars fans can meet the 501st Legion Bloodfin Garrison, part of the Star Wars Galaxy Imperial Forces, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday during Star Wars Reads 2016.
The Star Wars costume group will be suited up and ready for meet and greet and photo taking.
Star Wars crafts and activities also fill the day. Earn a Jedi Training Participant certificate or temporary tattoo by doing one of many activities. Things to do include a BB-8 paper plate craft or a Yoda shape craft, Star Wars activity puzzle sheets, duct tape crafts, Yoda ear headbands, Star Wars board games, Star Wars themed items to make on Tinkercad, and a Yoda scavenger hunt. Sign up for Star Wars Trivia Hour, held for adults at 2 p.m. Members of the team with the most points win a prize.
Other programs
Thursday has two programs. Snack Attack for Kids is from 4-5 p.m. when children ages 8-12 will learn how to make their own delicious, nutritious after-school snacks. The snacks are inexpensive and easy to make. Children will also learn about kitchen skills, such as knife safety, and the importance of food groups and how to eat healthy on a budget. Registration is required for this program and may be made from the events calendar atwww.bedlib.org.
Also on Thursday is Repurposed Crafts: Tatting. Learn to make knotted lace using a shuttle in this interesting program for teens and adults. Attendees will make a simple butterfly and more.
Friday is the day for the free family movie: "The Jungle Book," which will be shown on the big screen with surround sound. A free snack is provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. with the movie starting at 6:30 p.m.
October has 19 individual events on the calendar beginning with Star Wars Reads on Saturday. Then on Monday is Dinosaur Discovery for ages 6-9 at 4 p.m. Children will take a trip back in time to discover how dinosaurs lived millions of years ago through hands-on activities such as hatching a dinosaur egg and moving like a dinosaur. Participants will dig for dinosaur bones, put the bones together, and discover what dinosaur left those bones. Registration is required for this program.
This year, the library will honor American military personnel, past and present, again with the Our Heroes' Display. Pick up an ornament template and make an ornament to honor your hero. Ornaments from past displays are welcome. The display will begin on Oct. 17 and remain up through Veteran's Day. Running concurrently with the Our Heroes' Display is the Cards for Our Troops campaign. Holiday cards donated by Hoosier Hills Armed Forces Families Association will be available for customers to use to show their gratitude with a personal greeting. Cards to color or create your own design will be available in the children and teen services department. The cards will be collected after Veterans Day and given to HHAFFA to be sent to our troops.
Other October events include Be a Citizen Scientist, Preschool Discovery, Teen Animanga, Writer's Meet-up, Teen Writers Group, Video Editing, Meet the Raptors, family movie: "Zootopia," Family Science Night, TableTop Game Night, Comic Fest (when everyone gets a free comic book) and Book Character Day.
The library provides free programming for all ages throughout every month of the year. The online calendar of events provides complete information about each program and, should registration be required, the calendar makes registering for an event easy and convenient. Reading suggestion
"Calculated Risk: the Supersonic Life and Times of Gus Grissom" by George Leopold tells a story every Lawrence County resident should know. The first part of the book tells about Grissom's early life in Lawrence County and quotes several local residents who knew Grissom. The Wall Street Journal described the book as "fascinating and haunting" and "thrillingly told, taking readers into the cosmos with Grissom, conveying the sense of wonder and danger that accompanied these early voyages." The library has the book in hardcover.
