(BLOOMFIELD) - The sixth annual Mom Prom invites all ladies to dine, dance and donate to the Greene County Victim Advocacy program as well as training and education for sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) at the Greene County General Hospital.
Kelly Slaven, of the Greene County Daily World reports, Victim Advocate Vickie Aydt, along with the Greene County's Sexual Assault Response Team (SART),organize the event to not only benefit the cause, but to dedicate a night for women only to dress-up, fun and help bring awareness to the options and places victims can go to for support.
The event will take place in Heshey Hall at the Greene County Community Event Center on Saturday, Sept. 10. starting at 7 p.m.
A D.J, silent auction, crowning of a mom prom queen and a catered meal will be served.
A cash bar will also be available, making the event only open to ladies who are 21 and older.
"The role of the SANE nurse is not only to preserve the dignity of the victim but also to collect evidence that links the victim to the suspect." according to the official website for GC General Hospital.The training is expensive, time-consuming , thorough and often requires a lot of travel.
SART holds several fundraisers throughout the year to help fund the program; another program being the 'Walk A Mile in their Shoes' event held in April.
SANE nurses are relatively new to Greene County General Hospital. Previously, victims of sexual assault had to travel to Bloomington to under go a rape kit analysis or be examination by a certified nurse.
GC General Hospital now has three nurses in training; easing the already traumatic event of sexual assault by offering the service in Greene County, while also complying with a new law requiring trained nurses in each county.
GC General Hospital also has recently constructed a special room specifically for victims of sexual assault to receive care.
Aydt says working with the medical programs such as SANE is a direct connection to her own role dealing with the legal side of domestic violence, sexual assault and even robbery victims. Aydt strives to ensure the community is aware of all the support available, and victims are not left feeling alone-- that sexual or domestic violence can happen to anyone and it is not the victims fault.
Aydt has been an advocate for seven years says she truly enjoys helping victims get back on their feet after a traumatic event, as well as pointing them in the right direction to receive outside support or counseling.
Aydt, SART and SANE nurses will attend the event and talk about the cause.
Tickets to the mom prom are $20 and should be purchased in advance due to a catered meal, though will also be available at the door.
