Public Invited To Informational Tour On Forestry And Forest Products

Last updated on Thursday, September 22, 2016

(PAOLI) - Curious about logging and mill operations? Now is your chance to learn more.

On Thursday, October 13, Robert Andis, with Andis Logging is providing a tour in cooperation with the Indiana Chapter of the Society of American Foresters (INSAF) and the White River RC&D Forestry Committee.

Andis will provide a fascinating insight into the workings of the timber industry. Indiana is known for growing some of the finest hardwoods in the world, in particular, white oak. Andis will explain the relationship of timber growers (landowners) to the forest products industry. It takes a team to get fine hardwood products, an amazing renewable resource, to the marketplace.

The public is asked to meet at Andi's operation, located at 7680 S. SR 37 in Paoli by 9 a.m. ET on October 13. The tour is part of the INSAF's fall meeting and will give the public not only a chance to view a logging and mill operation first hand, but also to meet and talk to several professional foresters.

Following the morning tour, the public can drive over to the Southern Indiana Purdue Agricultural Center at 11371 E. Purdue Farm Road, Dubois, IN for the afternoon session on American chestnut plantings which starts at 1:30 p.m. ET. The public is encouraged to bring a sack lunch and join the foresters for lunch. The program adjourns at 2:45 p.m.

Both events are free to the public. For more information on the program contact John P. Stambaugh at forester@custom.net.

Information on Andis Logging:

Rob Andis began helping his father log in 1976 and continued with his logging operation into the 1990's, when he added sawmilling to his business.

In 2001 he started a log brokering operation to ship entire logs domestically and abroad. Both saw logs and veneer are shipped to various points in the US and around the world. Asia is the primary market for his logs today.

His capacity has grown to 7-8 million Bd Ft per year, with gross sales exceeding $10 million each year. He currently has over 6 million Bd Ft of standing timber purchased, mostly from private family woodlot owners. He has five dedicated logging crews working daily to provide him this inventory.

Andis has a unique method where his crews typically bring in the entire tree on the trucks to off-load on his yard. Rob then tallies every tree into a hand held computer, marks the tree where he wants his people to cut them, and codes the logs. The logs are then sent to designated areas in the yard for shipment.

Information on Indiana Society of American Foresters

The mission of the Society of American Foresters is to advance the science, education, technology and practice of forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish standards of professional excellence; and to use the knowledge, skills and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future availability of forest resources to benefit society.

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) began in 1900. The Society, with about 18,000 members, is the national organization representing the forestry profession in the United States and includes public and private practitioners, researchers, administrators, educators and forestry students. It is also the accreditation authority for professional forestry education in the United States.

SAF members subscribe to a code of ethics, the foundation for their professional behavior in relations with the land, the public, their employees (including clients), and with each other. Stewardship of the land is the cornerstone of the forestry profession. As such, SAF members advocate and practice land management consistent with ecologically sound principals.
