Persimmon Festival In Full Swing, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Arrives Wednesday

Last updated on Monday, September 19, 2016

(MITCHELL) - The 70th Annual Mitchell Persimmon Festival is in full swing.

The carnival rides begin tonight at 5 p.m. on Main Street.

The Mini, Little and Junior Miss Contests will take the Main Street Stage at 6 p.m. with the crowing of the Persimmon Festival Queen at 8 p.m.

Brandt Carmichael will then perform at 8:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the replica of Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall enters Lawrence County at 2 p.m. It will be escorted by hundreds of motorcyclists, law enforcement officers and emergency personnel in a convoy that will start in northern Lawrence County and stretch south into Mitchell.

Law enforcement will have all the intersections along the way blocked while the wall travels down Ind. 37 and into Mitchell.

Anyone can join the escort.

The wall is an 8-by-360-foot replica, and it is the largest traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

It will arrive in Judah at Johnny Junxions at 2 p.m. and then be escorted to Mitchell. The wall will be erected Thursday morning beginning at 8 a.m. at Mitchell City Hall, on South Sixth Street.

Volunteers are needed to help erect the wall. Once the wall is up, two guards will stand watch 24-hours a day until the wall is dismounted on Sunday at 2 p.m.
