(BEDFORD) - The North Lawrence Career Center and the Lost River Career Cooperative are among recipients of Career and Technical Education Rural Grants.
An amount of $100,000 is going to the North Lawrence facility, while Lost River will receive $99,909.
In addition to announcing those grants and 13 others targeting secondary education in Indiana, the Indiana Department of Education on Friday also reported grants were awarded to four post-secondary institutions. All of those are are Ivy Tech Community College facilities. That includes the Bloomington campus, which received $85,031.
The grants, totaling more than $1.7 million awarded around the state, will support innovative projects focused on the development, improvement and/or expansion of career and technical education programs in rural areas, according to the DOE news release.
North Lawrence Career Center Director Glenn Weil told the Times-Mail the grant is going to help improve opportunities, training and skill development in their Engineering Pathway by purchasing a FANUC robotic training center and pay for teacher training. In addition, they will purchase a Computer Numerical Control mill, laser engraver and other technology, which will help students apply scientific principles, math concepts, and physics to real-world applications.
Weil says, the grant, will be able to attract students and show them the potential and opportunity leading to great careers in manufacturing right here in Bedford.
Kevin Knies, director of the Lost River Career Cooperative told the Times-Mail the money will help build relations between business, industry and education. About half of the money will be used to hire a career coach. The rest of the money will be used for professional training and adding equipment to the agriculture departments at the cooperative's schools, which are Paoli, West Washington and Springs Valley.
The awards were presented in what the DOE reports is the third round of CTE Rural Grants. Funding for the grants is provided through the federal Perkins program.
