Missing Seymour Woman Found Dead Three Days After Crash

Last updated on Wednesday, September 21, 2016

(JENNINGS CO.) - A missing Seymour woman was found dead Tuesday after Indiana State Police responded to a report of a one-vehicle crash with injuries on U.S. 50 near the Jennings-Ripley County Line Tuesday night.

When the trooper arrived he found a male with leg injuries. He also located a deceased woman in the vehicle, which was located well off the roadway in a wooded area and was not visible from the roadway.

Troopers soon learned the two individuals had been reported missing two days earlier.

Indiana State Police began their investigation on Sunday when family members reported 37-year-old Nikki Reed missing. Family members told police that Reed had made a trip to Pennsylvania to pick up her boyfriend, 39-year-old Kevin Bell. Family members had last spoke to her on Saturday when the two were traveling back to Indiana. During the course of the investigation, police learned that Bell's family had not been able to contact him.

Police say at some point Saturday afternoon, Bell lost control of the 1999 Ford Explorer he was driving and ran off the road in the 8600 block of east US 50. The vehicle traveled down an embankment and struck a tree head on. At this time, it appears that Reed, who was in the front passenger seat, sustained fatal injuries in the crash and died instantly.

Due to the intensive injuries to Bell's legs, it took him three days to crawl from the wreckage to the roadway.

Bell was taken to St. Vincent-Jennings Hospital in North Vernon for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Trp. Rick Hewitt is conducting the crash investigation. Trp. Hewitt and Trp. Jordan Craig were assisted by other troopers with the Indiana State Police, Jennings County Sheriff's Department, Jennings County Fire, Jennings County EMS, and the Jennings County Coroner's Office.

The investigation is ongoing.
