Martinsville Police Warn - Heroin Mixed With Elephant Tranquilizer, Narcan Not Working

Last updated on Tuesday, September 13, 2016

(MARTINSVILLE) - The Martinsville Police Department is warning residents after seeing a sharp increase in heroin overdoses.

Morgan County Coroner Annette Davis Rohlman says the increase is a result of dealers mixing a lethal amount of elephant tranquilizer with heroin.

She released the following statement to the Martinsville Police Department on Sunday.

"The dealers are now mixing heroin with an elephant tranquilizer. One drop can kill you and you have no idea what's in the syringe you are injecting! Our numbers are up considerably from years past and unfortunately I think we will have far more deaths than years past. First responders are all carrying Narcan, but it's not working!!!! Get HELP before it's too late!"

The state as a whole has seen a steady increase in overdoses this year. Just last month, one person was killed after more than a dozen overdoses in Jennings County.
