Indiana University Junior Backup Kicker Arrested After Dispute Over Dog

Last updated on Friday, September 23, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Police arrested a backup kicker for Indiana University’s football team early Wednesday morning after he refused to leave an ex-girlfriend’s residence during a dispute over a dog.

Bloomington police arrested 21-year-old Aaron Del Grosso on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespassing and public intoxication. He was booked into the Monroe County Jail at 3:04 a.m. Wednesday.

According to Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams, Del Grosso called 911 about 2:30 a.m. that morning, reporting his ex-girlfriend refused to give him his dog back.

Officers responded to the 400 block of the East Ind. 45/46 Bypass, after the dispatcher dispatchers received a call from a woman reporting her roommate's ex-boyfriend walked into their apartment and was intoxicated.

Officers found Del Grosso standing in his ex-girlfriend's yard and walking in the street. Kellams says, officers smelled the odor of alcohol on Del Grosso.

Del Grosso and his ex-girlfriend appear to share custody of the pet, and officers told them they needed to sort out their civil issue at a later time and told Del Grosso to leave the woman's home several times.

Officers left, as Del Grosso moved out of the yard and onto the sidewalk. Police then drove across the struck and parked to make sure Del Grosso was going to leave.

Del Grosso didn't leave, instead he returned to the woman's front door and knocked, prompting another 911 call from those inside.

Del Grosso returned to his ex-girlfriend's front door and knocked on it, officers reported, prompting another 911 call and Del Grosso's arrest.

"We gave him several opportunities to leave, asked him several times to leave, and he would not do it," Kellams says. "Finally, we did get him onto the sidewalk area, off of the property, and officers did leave, but within just a few minutes he went back onto the property and began knocking on the door again."

Del Grosso was IU's primary kicker as a freshman in 2014, before now-junior Griffin Oakes took over the starting job early in the season. Del Grosso did not appear in any games in 2015, but did appear on a kickoff in IU's win over Ball State in the 2016 home opener.

"We are aware of the situation concerning Aaron Del Grosso," IU Athletics said in a statement, "we will continue to monitor it as details become available and will take appropriate action."

This is the second incident involving an IU football player in September. Freshman defensive lineman Jerome Johnson was cited on Sept. 3 for illegal possession and consumption. Resident Assistant staff found Johnson passed passed out and unresponsive in a stairwell landing between the third and fourth floor at Briscoe Quad.
