(BLOOMINGTON) - It's in the headlines nearly every day: a child experiencing some sort of trauma.

Whether it be violence, abuse, a car crash or bullying, trauma can change young lives forever. It also changes the ways in which adults must approach children in order to form positive relationships.

That's why the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is partnering with the Monroe County Asset Building Coalition to host a seminar on how adults can learn to see the world in the same way children affected by trauma see it. The event is part of IYI's Youth Worker Café series and will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11 at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 East Rogers Road in Bloomington.

Linda Patton, coordinator for the South Central Community Action Program's Thriving Connections, and Allison Zimpfer-Hoerr, community and education coordinator for the Youth Services Bureau of Monroe County, will speak at the event. They will help attendees learn how to help youth through traumatic experiences. Attendees will learn about the different types of trauma, the impact trauma has on a young person's development, and how to recognize the coping strategies young people may use to survive and cope with the trauma they've experienced.

The forum and lunch are free, but reservations are required. Please RSVP at www.iyi.org/YWC. If you have trouble with the link, contact IYI Statewide Outreach Manager Debbie Jones at djones@iyi.org.

Youth Worker Cafés are designed to bring together local youth workers to build relationships and inspire collaborations that will benefit children. For more information on this Youth Worker Café, contact IYI Central Indiana Outreach Manager Lela Smith at lsmith@iyi.org.
