Doctors Recommend Flu Shots Ahead Of 2016 Flu Season

Last updated on Thursday, September 1, 2016

(UNDATED) - A popular and less painful alternative to the flu shot likely won’t be offered at your doctor’s office this fall.

The CDC is not recommending people get the FluMist vaccine this flu season.

The mist vaccine was a popular option, especially among young children who may be scared of needles. However, research showed the FluMist was much less effective when compared to a regular flu shot.

Many pharmacies are already encouraging people to get their flu shots, but is it too early?

One doctor recommends getting your flu vaccine before cases start popping up in central Indiana.

"It's better to be prepared than to wait and know that it's a bad season before you get vaccinated," said Dr. Sarah Stelzner a pediatrician with Eskenazi Health.

Doctors say there is no way to predict how severe this flu season will be or how well this year's vaccine will work. Last year, people who got a flu shot still had a 50% chance of catching the virus.

Most doctors recommend a flu shot for anyone six months or older. As of now, there is no shortage of the flu vaccine in the United States.
