(MITCHELL) - The City of Mitchell has been awarded a $171,000 grant to help aging residents stay in their home by paying for needed repairs.

The Times Mail reports the funding will benefit at least eight residents, possibly more, depending on the needs of the homeowner.

According to Debra Lilly, who wrote the city's grant through Administrative Resources association, the city will put up $5,000 so there will be $176,000 to help residents in Mitchell.

ARa, with the city's help, has been collecting applications from eligible residents for several weeks. So far around 13 people have submitted application. Applications can be picked up at City Hall, 407 S. Sixth St.

To qualify, the homeowner must be 55 years old or older and meet income requirements, or have a disabled person living with them in the home. The homeowner must live within the city of Mitchell. For a one-person household, the income threshold is $32,000 and for a two-person household, it's $36,600.

The maximum amount spent on a home is $15,000, but some homes may require only $6,000-$7,000 in work, which would allow the program to help more than eight people in Mitchell.

In exchange for the work, a three-year contract lien is instituted. If the homeowner lives in the home for three years, the contract is fulfilled. If the home is sold before the three years is up, it's pro-rated for repayment.

It to be several weeks or months before the work begins on houses. ARa will advertise for local contractors who would like to be on the bidders' list.
