(BLOOMINGTON) - The commercial bus driver involved in the two-vehicle accident that killed Allison Hoeppner early Saturday morning has been cited for driving at an unsafe speed and disregarding a traffic control device.
According to Monroe County Police, 43-year-old Jonathan Brewer of Hamptonville, North Carolina was driving a 2003 Prevost bus north on Ind. 37 and approaching the intersection with South Old Ind. 37 at 12:12 a.m. He reported the traffic light turned yellow, then "immediately turned red" and that he "lifted off" the gas in an effort to slow down through the intersection. Brewer told police he didn't see Hoeppner's 2001 Subaru Legacy, which had the right of way while entering the highway to go north, until he was in the intersection.
Brewer told deputies he was traveling too fast to stop safely at the intersection.
The impact of the crash sent Hoeppner's vehicle off the road, down an embankment and into a ditch.
45-year-old Hoeppner of Bloomington was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hoeppner was a breast cancer survivor and daughter of former Indiana University football coach Terry Hoeppner, who died of brain cancer in 2007.
