Boyhood Home Of Astronaut Virgil I. Grissom Open During Persimmon Festival

Last updated on Tuesday, September 20, 2016

(MITCHELL) - The Boyhood Home of Astronaut Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom will be open from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. weekdays during the Persimmon Festival.

The home will also be open Saturday following the Persimmon Festival parade until at least 6 p.m.

The residence at 715 Grissom Ave. was home to the Grissom family from 1928 until 1995, when the astronaut's mother passed away. Virgil lived in the home until 1944 when he graduated from Mitchell High School and entered the U.S. Army during World War II.

The home is decorated for the 1930s and early 1940s when the astronaut lived in the home. There are some original Grissom family pieces in the home as well as other period pieces. The back porch contains articles and artifacts pertaining to his role as one of the Original Seven Mercury astronauts and his role in the Gemini and Apollo programs.

Admission is free, but donations are accepted. The home will be open on Saturdays through the end of October with Christmas hours from 6-9 p.m. on Dec. 10-11 and Dec. 17-18.
