Bedford Fire Hydrants Have New Color-Coded Reflectors

Last updated on Thursday, September 29, 2016

(BEDFORD) - You may have noticed new reflectors on local fire hydrants.

Color-colored Reflectors have been added to more than 600 fire hydrants. Each cost $8 and are UV-treated and made of reflective material and should last around 10 years.

The different colors represent the quality of the hydrant. Orange indicates water pressure is at 500 to 1,000 gallons per minute, green is 1,000 to 1,500 and red is 500 or below. There are also blue reflectors on hand, but those are for hydrants with water pressure above 1,500 gallons per minute. Workers have yet to find one of those hydrants.

According to Bedford Fire Chief Jon anger, those reflectors help increase safety and efficiency. The reflectors are a part of the city's plan to replace old and damaged hydrants. Next year, the hydrants will be painted yellow for even greater visibility and old fire plugs will be replaced.

The improvement improved the city's fire safety ranking. The city has went from a Class Five to Class Four city.
