Activists Vandalize Monroe Democrats' Headquarters

Last updated on Monday, September 12, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Just one day after the opening of a new field office, a group of people marched into the building at 501 North Walnut Street, destroyed supplies and signs and harassed volunteers.

The incident happened at 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

Daniel Wallace, a field organizer for the coordinated campaigns for Democrats running for U.S. Senate and 9th Congressional District seats and for governor, was in the office at the time along with three other college-aged people making phone calls.

He told police five or six people dressed in black hoodies and sunglasses came in and scattered fliers, put office supplies in the sink and then turned on the water, squirted dish soap everywhere, knocked down a few signs in the office, stole some food and put an American flag in the toilet while shouting - "Our freedoms are stronger than your prisons."

Wallace told police the group seemed disappointed there weren't many people in the office and went outside. That is when he locked the door as the group scattered more fliers outside and held up a big sign. He told police he couldn't read what was on the sign because it was facing the street.

This is not the first time a political party was victimized. On Wednesday, a storage shed being used by the Monroe County Republicans was broken into and more than $2,700 worth of office supplies and campaign signs were stolen. Ellettsville police are investigating that incident.
