(SEYMOUR) - A 20-month-old who nearly drowned Thursday afternoon in an above-ground pool at her Seymour home remains hospitalized in Louisville.
According to Jackson County Sheriff's Department report, Sabrina Jacobson was pulled from the pool in the 7400 block of North U.S. 31 by Tina Anderson, who had been watching the girl and her 5-year-old brother.
Police say, Anderson tried to administer CPR to the toddler, although she had never done it before.
Anderson told police she had been working outside in the yard and watching the kids, and when she looked up, the girl was gone. That's when she looked in the pool.
The deck of the above-ground pool is accessible by a ladder.
John Long, an off-duty Brownstown police officer who was about a half-mile away, responded and administered rescue breaths to the child until an ambulance crew could arrive. Jackson County Officer Adam Nicholson responded to the scene as a Jackson County Emergency Medical Services crew was pulling out of the driveway. He escorted the ambulance to Schneck Hospital.
According to police, while en route to the hospital, emergency workers reported the girl was breathing and crying.
After arriving at Schneck, the toddler was flown to Louisville by a StatFlight helicopter.
Late Friday, family members told police the child was responding well to therapy at Kosair Children's Hospital and may be able to come home sometime this week.
Jackson County Detective Bob Lucas says everyone who participated in pulling the girl from the water and giving her aid deserves credit for helping make it possible for her to come home.
Jacobson and her brother, who are the children of Phillip Jacobson and Renee Lewis of Columbus, live with their grandparents, Billy and Evelyn Stout. Anderson also lives with the Stouts. The grandparents were in the house when the incident happened.
Also assisting at the scene was Jackson County Detective Bob Lucas and Officer Dustin Steward.
