Woman Facing Welfare Fraud Charges

Last updated on Wednesday, August 24, 2016

(SEYMOUR) - A Seymor woman was arrested on felony fraud charges after police say she received more than $4,000 in food stamps she was not entitled to receive.

Seymour police arrested 51-year-old Sandra Ashcraft early Saturday morning. If convicted, she could face a sentence of six months to 2.5 years in jail.

State investigators say her arrests stems from an investigation that began on July 28.

Scott Davis, with Indiana Family and Social Services Administration's compliance division, says that Ashcraft began receiving food stamps in 2009 and continued to receive them through July 1, 2016.

According to investigators, Ashcraft failed on two separate occasions to provide the Jackson County Division of Family Resources her correct address and did not list all sources of income or information about household members on her application for public assistance.

Investigators says, Ashcraft received $4,253 in food stamp benefits that she was not entitled to between August 2015 and July of this year.
