White River Humane Society In Dire Need Of Help

Last updated on Wednesday, August 24, 2016

(BEDFORD) - The White River Humane Society is in dire need of the public’s help.

Dr. Jody Parks, a board member, is currently acting as manager of the shelter.

"I am working unpaid after we lost our management staff at the shelter," Parks told the Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday morning. "We are in dire need of help."

The management staff resigned without much notice.

The shelter is currently housing 86 dogs and 143 cats. That number does not count for the numerous cats and dogs being fostered by members of the community.

"If we get above 95 dogs we will have nowhere to house them," Parks added.

Currently the shelter has 6 kennel techs that work part-time. Those techs along with Parks are trying to get the shelter back in shape.

"We need volunteers to do basic clean up work and help with repairs," she added.

The grass has not been mowed in several weeks, the building needs a thorough cleaning, and there are many minor repairs that need to be made.

Because of the large number of animals at the shelter controlling the spread of sickness has become a problem.

"Many of the cats are sick," Parks added. "We have nowhere to separate them from the general population."

If the situation doesn't get under control Parks says the solution would be for the shelter to stop taking any animals for a week, so they can get problems corrected.

Parks also discovered the past management didn't have signed contracts on file with the commissioners, the cities of Bedford, Mitchell or Oolitic and that government officials were not given monthly reports from the shelter.

The shelter also recently lost their insurance after a person was bit at the facility, but has since found a new provider but at a higher cost.

If anyone would like to volunteer their time or make donations, please contact the White River Humane Society at (812) 279-2457.
