(UNDATED) - On Saturday at 8:26 p.m. the Cannelburg Fire Department was called to a fire at the Gary Mathies farm on County Road 1250 East. The fire was located in a barn that contained more than 230 head of cattle.

Cannelburg Fire Chief Jordan Graber says the farmer was able to get all of the cattle out of the barn.

Flames from the fire could be seen three miles away and were shooting more than 100 feet into the air when firefighters arrived. More than 60 firefighters battled the blaze.

Flames were fueled by both an old wooden barn and the 125 bales of straw inside.

Fire Chief Graber says they believe the fire was electrical in nature.

The barn suffered extensive damage, but firefighters were able to save a small portion of the building that housed farm equipment and managed to keep the blaze from spreading to near by grain bins.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from Montgomery, Loogootee and Martin County Civil Defense.

But the time firefighters arrived the fire had spread to the house engulfing it in flames.
