Springville Man Arrested After Allegedly Raping 13-Year-Old

Last updated on Monday, August 8, 2016

(BEDFORD) - A Springville man was arrested and is facing felony charges of child molesting, rape and criminal confinement.

Lawrence County Police arrested 74-year-old Laverne Meadows on Friday.

According to a Lawrence County Superior Court I probable cause affidavit, Meadows is accused of molesting a 13-year-old girl, whose family owns the mobile home Meadows rents.

The girl told police that on June 13, she went to the trailer to retrieve a movie. When she asked Meadows where it was, he told her it had fallen behind a desk or dresser in the bedroom. The girl went into the bedroom to get the DVD and when she turned to walk out of the room, Meadows allegedly blocked her path and told her she was not leaving.

"Meadows grabbed (the girl) and pushed her into a chair and then grabbed her and threw her onto the bed and got on top of her," the court paperwork reads.

The girl told police she attempted to push Meadows off of her, but he was using all his weight to hold her down. Meadows then had sex with the girl.

Meadows is also charged with using a sex toy while committing a sex act in the presence of the victim.

"Meadows told (the girl) that if she told anyone what had happened, he would kill her," the affidavit states.

Police searched his home and found several sex toys and pornography.

Meadows denied having any sexual contact with the girl, but did admit he smacked the girl's butt in late 2015.

He also denied owning any sex toys or pornography, but after police told him they had found the items in the home, Meadows allegedly admitted to hiding the items.

Meadows is being held in the Lawrence County Jail on a $200,000 surety, or $20,005 cash.
