(JUDAH) - A Springville teen bit his tongue after he lost control of the car he was driving in a curve on Guthrie Road near Lemon Quarry Road Saturday night.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 16-year-old Michael Sanders was traveling to Hardin Ridge to a friend's house when he told police the 2004 Honda Accord he was driving began to swerve out of control, left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

Sanders told police he was traveling around 40 miles per hour and wearing his seatbelt but his foot got stuck under the dashboard and once the vehicle stopped he was able to pull his foot from out of his shoe and exit the vehicle.

He says he bit his tongue during the crash, but had no other injuries.

Police say skid marks at the scene indicate Sanders was traveling too fast to negotiate the curve, causing the vehicle to slide off the east side of the road and hit a tree near the hinges of the driver's side door. This caused the vehicle to spin mid-air and come to rest in the opposite direction of the rock embankment.

Police say Sanders was groggy and sweating profusely following the incident. Police had Sanders perform a field sobriety test. They discovered that he was not intoxicated.

Sanders' parents transported him to a local hospital to be checked out as a precaution.
