(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Recreation Foundation will present the 2016 Claude Akins Memorial Golf Classic September 3-4 at Otis Park.

The six-person scramble offers more than $30,000 awarded in a multitude of team, individual and weekend prizes.
Morning rounds get under way at 7:15 a.m. and afternoon rounds start at 1:15 p.m. both days.

Organizer Joey Elliott says there are still some slots open for the Sunday morning round and for both the Saturday and Sunday afternoon round.

Proceeds from the event go to the Claude Akins Scholarship and the BRF Scholarship, given every year to a graduating senior at BNL, as well as many worthwhile projects involving recreation and improvements to our City Parks.

"We have incorporated a new twist or contest to the tournament this year that we are really excited about," Elliott says. "The prize is something real special and out of the proceeds from this particular contest the BRF will be donating a minimum of $1,500. to the Boys and Girls Club - depending on certain things it could be a higher amount."

One new event will happen on No. 18 - thanks to German American Bank.

Players will be able to put money down $5 to $20 and if they hit their tee shot onto the No. 18 green they will double their money. If they miss the money goes directly to the Recreation Foundation.

Another big opportunity awaits golfers on No. 17.

"For $10, players will hit a shot just across the creek to an area that will have a boarder around it. If they land ball within the boarder, their name will go into a drawing to win four rounds of golf at Pete Dye Course - a $1,400-$1,500 value.

Since 2015 more than $100,000 in funding from the BRF includes:

  • Materials for the construction of the Indoor Golf Practice Facility at Otis Park Golf Course
  • Indoor Putting Green for Golf Practice Facility
  • $5,000 towards construction materials for Soccer Complex Covered Pavilion
  • New Wilson Park Little League Field Scoreboard
  • Renovation of Otis Park Stone Picnic Pavilions including new grills
  • Purchase of 20' Diagonal Screen Outdoor Projection System to show movies
  • New Sod for #17 Blue Tee plus one load of sand for Bunkers at Otis Park Golf Course
  • Materials for new siding, soffit and fascia for Clubhouse, Cart Barn and Range Ball Building
  • $12,000 towards irrigation on Otis Park golf course tee areas
  • Red Brick Patio renovations - including concrete, sod, irrigation and landscaping

The 2015 Tournament was a BIG success with over $32,000 raised. Not only does the Bedford Recreation Foundation strive to provide a First Class Golf Tournament for everyone's enjoyment but, most importantly the funds raised by this event are at work helping to enhance the quality of life in our community.

Your generous support of this tournament will allow this organization the opportunity to continue our mission of contributing to important and worthwhile projects that not only we can enjoy but, future generations can benefit from.

Those wishing to participate as a sponsor in this year's event, or those who want to put in a patron-sponsored team, should contact Joey Elliott at (812) 275-3363.
