Sixteen Racers Compete In Sixth Annual Hillbilly 500

(MITCHELL) - Sixteen racers traveled down the track on Teke Burton Drive at the Sixth Annual Hillbilly 500 on Saturday.

The race began at noon.

Those participating raced their homemade jalopies down a 500-foot slope on Teke Burton Drive, starting at the railroad overpass near Orchard Street. This year, the event had a new ramp, built by Charles Cessna.

Racers came from Illinois and Kentucky to join local favorites.

Winners are as follows:

  • In the 5 - 8 age group - Makenna Stiles
  • In the 9 -13 age group - Jathan Stiles
  • In the 14 -17 age group - James Brown
  • In the 18 + age group - Morgan Anderson
  • Z102 102.5 WPHZ choice - Gabe Hensen
  • Mayor's Choice - Makenna Stiles
  • Most Outrageous Car - Elliott McCorkle

Those participating and viewing the race gathered donations of canned goods for Bertha's Mission. Officials also gathered children's clothing to give to children in need. The Lions Club is working with Hatfield Elementary School to get a room at the school where clothes can be kept for children who need them.

According to Larry Hardman, who helped organize the race put on by the Mitchell Lions Club, there will be a cart-building classes for those wanting to participate next year the classes will be held in January or February.

He also hopes to have a tractor race next year and or set up a competition between all the fire departments in the county to see which one can build the best cart.

He's also thinking about a having live entertainment the night before the race to bring the community together.
