(SPENCER) - The murder trial of a Spencer man who is accused of abducting and killing 15-month-old Shaylyn Ammerman has been rescheduled for October.

Kyle Joseph Parker's murder trial was to begin on Wednesday morning in Owen County Circuit Court.

Now, court officials say pretrial conferences will continue, and the next hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on October 5.

Public defender Jacob Fish Fish requested the continuance because of "ongoing discovery issues they have to complete."

Owen County Prosecutor Don VanDerMoere had no objection to the continuance.

The prosecution and defense agreed that if they want to make a jury request before that October 5 hearing, they will file written motions to the court.

Parker is accused of abducting 15-month-old Shaylyn Ammerman from the crib at her paternal grandmother's house on Jefferson Street, near Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, before dawn on March 23. Parker had been drinking at the house that Tuesday night with Shaylyn's uncle and step-grandfather.

Indiana State Police arrested Parker on March 24, on charges of obstruction of justice and failure to report a dead body, the same evening the toddler's body was found near the White River, north of Gosport.

Days later, he was also charged with murder, rape, child molesting, kidnapping, aggravated battery and strangulation.

According to court documents, Parker's stepfather told police that Parker told him he acted alone in the brutal assault and killing, then used bleach to try to destroy DNA evidence and burned the toddler's clothes.
