Owen County Woman Dies After Piece Of Semi Brake Drum Crashes Through Windshield

(SPENCER) - An Owen County woman suffered serious injuries Wednesday, and later died, after her vehicle was struck by a 21-pound brake drum that came off an unknown semi and went through her windshield.

According to an Owen County Sheriff's Department report, 31-year-old Sarah Carr of Spencer was driving west on Indiana 46 in Owen County near Flatwoods Road around 6 p.m. when the brake drum crashed through her windshield.

When police arrived they found Carr's vehicle off the north side of the road down an embankment. The vehicle had grazed a utility pole and had a large hole in the windshield on the driver's side.

According to witnesses, the semi was traveling east when a large piece of the semi's brake drum came off the vehicle, bounced on the roadway and went through Carr's windshield and struck her.

Carr was transported by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington, where she was pronounced dead. A juvenile passenger in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was also take transported to the hospital for treatment.injuries.

A second vehicle struck another piece of the semi's brake drum and sustained damages underneath.

At this time there is no information on the semi that was involved, other than the back of the trailer was silver with dark green trim around it, according to a news release.
