New Special Procecutor Named In Former Monroe Co. Auditor Case

Last updated on Friday, August 26, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - A new special prosecutor is taking over the investigation into alleged misuse of county credit cards by former Monroe County Auditor Steve Saulter.

Circuit Court Judge Marc R. Kellams has appointed former Vanderburgh County prosecutor Stan Levco to serve as special prosecutor in the case.

In November 2015, Judge Kellams appointed former Hamilton County prosecuting attorney Sonia J. Leerkamp, to look into "alleged criminal activity involving Steve Saulter." Leerkamp withdrew from the case for "personal reasons."

According to court records, Judge Kellams appointed Levco to replace her on Monday.

Monroe County detectives say just over $1,600 in purchases were flagged and allegedly used by Saulter to purchase personal items, including groceries bought from multiple area Kroger grocery stores and miscellaneous items from Spencer Gifts between September 9 and October 11 of last year.

Saulter served seven and a half years as auditor before resigning from office in July. His chief deputy, Therese Chambers, was chosen in a Democratic caucus to finish his term.
