(BLOOMINGTON) - Monroe County Sheriff's Office reserve deputies will have a new home near Karst Farm Park after the Monroe County commissioners approved a land swap with the county fair association.

The Hearld Times reports, the commissioners and the Monroe County Fair Association agreed last Friday to trade parcels of land near the fairgrounds. A new building for the reserve deputies will be be buildt on a parcel of land located just north and east of the county highway garage. The new plans include storage of equipment, utility vehicles and bicycles used to patrol the county trails. There will also be a place for meetings and training.

The new location will allow reserve officers better patrol the county trail from Karst Farm Park that will connect to the Heritage Trail in Ellettsville in the wake of recent reports of sexual assaults near the Clear Creek Trail and Monroe County YMCA outdoor walking path.

Their building was located at Rogers Street, but that property was sold. Since then, the reserves are sharing space at the Monroe County Airport.

As for the fair association, the swap will allow greater flexibility in developing the property it currently leases for $1 a year from the county.

Earlier this year, the Monroe County Fair Board approved a master plan for the fairgrounds that is expected to provide guidance on desired improvements to the site during the next 20 years. According to that plan, the proposed upgrades include improving drainage through additional stormwater basins, relocating the community building, upgrading the swine building, adding heating and cooling to some commercial buildings and moving the grandstand further north as well as enlarging it.
