(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford, Bedford Police and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department will host the American Police Canine Association 2016 National Conference.

Between 125 to 150 law enforcement canine teams will travel to Lawrence County for the conference the week of September 25-29.

Teams will attend training for problem solving, obtain legal updates, acquire new techniques in various phases of law enforcement work and police service dog operations. The conference is designed to provide a comprehensive training curriculum that is focused on real world based training scenarios and incidents response. Training will include law enforcement leadership seminars, state and federal legal updates, emergency incident response seminars, tracking scenarios, advanced narcotics detection, concealment training, explosive and accelerant detection training, cadaver detection training, tactical training, helicopter and watercraft deployments and felony vehicle operations with K-9 deployments.

Master K-9 Trainer Mike Johnson, of the Bedford Police Department says this is the eighth time the conference has been held in Lawrence County.

Johnson and his assistant BPD officer Jeremy Bridges are known across the nation for their abilities to train police dogs. Johnson, who is the president of the APCA along with Bridges have been training police dogs together for more than 20 years. Johnson says, 43 police departments in the state travel to Bedford to train their canine twice a month.

You can help by joining forces with the Bedford Police and Lawrence County Sheriff's departments with a sponsorship. Your support will advance training for these K-9 officers and their four-legged partners. Sponsorships are tax deductible and any donations help. Those that donate $150 or more will have their names or business logo displayed at public training locations, the Lawrence County Public Demonstration Night and signage throughout the conference.
