Defense Claims Daniel Messel Is Innocent Victim

Last updated on Wednesday, August 3, 2016

(NASHVILLE) - The defense attorney for a Bloomington man charged with killing an Indiana University student says her client is the innocent victim of an incomplete police investigation.

Defense attorney Dorie Maryan said in her opening statement on Tuesday that investigators quickly arrested their first suspect and ignored other possible suspects.

Messel is charged in the April 2015 killing of Hannah Wilson. The 22-year-old suburban Indianapolis woman's beaten body was found in a vacant lot about 10 miles northwest of IU's Bloomington campus.

Brown County Prosecutor Ted Adams said evidence pointed toward Messel's guilt: The defendant's cellphone was found near Wilson's body, her blood was found in his car, and Messel was carrying a bag of his clothes spotted with Wilson's blood when he was arrested.

The jury is made up of eight women and four men. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
