Bloomington Fifth Graders To Benefit From Exercise

Last updated on Tuesday, August 9, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Select students in Bloomington and Ellettsville schools, will be moving around the classroom as they learn this year.

The G.O.A.L. program - sponsored by the Bloomington Hospital Foundation and Old National Bank - installs equipment to facilitate active learning throughout the school day in one fifth grade class at every Bloomington school as well as Richland Bean Blossom, for a total of 15 schools. Alex Purcell, program manager, says the equipment will be integrated into the lessons. Students can actually be active as they learn.

School begins this week, the first opportunity for students to try out the equipment. The program is the largest effort of its type for IU Health and the G.O.A.L. program. It was piloted in one class at Fairview Elementary School in Bloomington last year.

G.O.A.L. mission: To provide kids and families the opportunity to receive education and support on nutrition, fitness and behavioral habits in order to make positive life-long changes for an active lifestyle.

The program operates in cooperation with community partners providing medical, behavioral, nutrition, and fitness education and support.
