Bedford Mayor To Speak At Indiana Bike & Walk Summit

Last updated on Monday, August 29, 2016

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Hoosiers working to make their communities more walkable and bikeable will gather for a summit at the Omni Severin Hotel in Indianapolis Aug. 29-31 including Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis.

Health by Design and Bicycle Indiana are hosting the state's first combined Bike & Walk Summit to highlight best practices, celebrate progress and inspire attendees to help shape Indiana's active-transportation future.

The agenda is full of interesting speakers and topics, one of which includes a 10:45 a.m. panel on Wednesday with four mayors who are leading the way on walking and biking in their communities. The mayors include Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis, Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott, Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski and Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler.

"Increasingly, people want to live, work and visit places where they can walk and bike," said Kim Irwin, director of Health by Design. "Civic leaders throughout Indiana have recognized the opportunities this trend creates and are investing in walking and biking infrastructure, trails and transit."

"We've seen a lot of progress with regard to new infrastructure that promotes bicycling in Indiana and greater awareness of the benefits of bicycling," said Nancy Tibbett, executive director of Bicycle Indiana. "But there's so much more we could be doing throughout the state. That's why it's helpful to get together to share, learn from and inspire each other."

Presenting sponsors include the Indiana State Department of Health and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).
