Accidents Caused By Road Debris Increasing

Last updated on Tuesday, August 16, 2016

(UNDATED) - A new study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says more than 200,000 crashes involved road debris in the last four years.

It's also the culprit for approximately 39,000 road injuries and more than 500 deaths between 2011 and 2014.

The study found that nearly 37 percent of all deaths in road debris crashes resulted from the driver swerving to avoid hitting an object.

Overcorrecting at the last minute to avoid debris can increase a driver's risk of losing control of their vehicle and making a bad situation worse.

Greg Seiter, public affairs manager for AAA Hoosier Motor Club says in addition to securing your loads to make sure nothing falls out, have your vehicle inspected regularly to identify rusted parts, such as a muffler or tailpipe that could fall off and cause an accident.
