Woods Steps Down As Lawrence County Democratic Chair, Will Focus On Representing All Voters Of District 65

Last updated on Wednesday, July 6, 2016

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Democratic chairman and candidate for State Representative, Chris Woods, has stepped down as party chair. Woods has been succeeded by local educator, Matthew Ray.

Since being elected in 2013, Woods often spoke of his vision to provide the residents of Lawrence County with a choice on Election Day. The Democratic Party has immensely grown under his leadership and has a well-qualified slate of candidates for the 2016 election cycle.

"My vision has not changed," Wood said. "As a candidate for the Indiana House, I want to be the voice for all Hoosiers. I believe actions speak louder than words and that is why I felt it necessary to resign my position as chair. I am proud of the work we have accomplished and look forward to extending that progress throughout District 65."

Woods' top priorities are advocating for Hoosier students and educators, addressing the drug epidemic and public health crisis, and ensuring our communities receive adequate funding to improve dangerously failing infrastructure.

"These are not Republican or Democratic issues," Wood added. "I want to make it clear that I am a candidate, and will be a representative, that listens to all ideas and will work across the aisle to create positive change in our communities."

Matthew Ray is proud to accept the position as Lawrence County's Democratic Party Chairman.

Ray was approached by party leaders to become more active locally after personal protests against state government leader's actions towards education. A member of ISTA and local North Lawrence Education Association Secretary, he has seen the damage caused by the Republican school reform. This damage ultimately propelled him into broader politics.

Upon the request of then-chair Chris Woods to attend the Indiana Democratic
Convention, Ray felt the need to get more involved.

"The party is full of amazingly diverse people standing up for fairness, inclusion, commonsense policy, and the betterment of ALL Hoosiers. That resonates so closely with Lawrence County. We need to build ourselves up to succeed today," said Ray.

Ray hopes to build upon the current progress of the party and encourages people to get involved.

"We are providing more choice in elections. I know many Democrats around Lawrence County feel as though they are they only ones out there. Come out of the shadows; you are not alone! We don't plan on giving up the effort anytime soon," Ray said.
