Travis Burkhart Foundation Gives Back To Local Police In Wake Of Dallas Police Shooting

Last updated on Wednesday, July 13, 2016

(WASHINGTON) - In response to the police shootings in Dallas last week, the Travis Burkhart Foundation, a Washington nonprofit, decided to give back to local police from five counties in Southern Indiana.

The foundation gave each department 12 tickets to a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game on July 23. Sheriffs from Knox, Greene, Daviess, Pike and Martin Counties came together on Monday and received the gift for each of their departments, presented by the foundation's Vice President Johnny Cummins.

Cummins told the Washington Herald Times that these officers give a lot every day for their job and being able to help boost their moral in a time like this is nice to be able to do and show appreciation for what local law enforcement do every day.

Since its creation in 2008, the Travis Burkhart Foundation has raised more than $80,000 and gifted 330 times throughout the five surrounding counties, a number that continues to grow as its popularity expands. all the money raised goes back into the community, nothing goes to the Burkhart family.

All of the board members serve as volunteers and help those who request for assistance through the organizations website, travisburkhartfoundation.com.

The first thought by Kim Burkhart - mother of Travis Burkhart and secretary of the foundation - was to give the tickets to local police and show that the local community still supports them, even in these tough times saying the public doesn't consider what public servants sacrifice in their daily lives to serve the public.

Kim works with alongside her husband, Mike Burkhart and of their son Travis Burkhart, who is the founder.

She hopes the act of kindness will help people respond better to tough situations, like the one she went through when Travis suffered a severe closed head injury and a fracture to the C-2 vertebrae in his neck during a car crash on Feb. 12, 2008.

Other events through the Travis Burkhart Foundation include - Ride for Recovery Open Top Poker Run set for Saturday, St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Game on July 23 and a Golf Scramble on Aug. 6.
