Two Arrested After Police Find Cocaine

(MARTIN CO.) - Two people were arrested on drug charges after Martin County Sheriff deputies found cocaine.

On Thursday at 4:50 a.m. Martin County Sheriff Deputy Danny Salmon was patrolling county roads in the eastern part of the county, when a blue 2002 Chrysler 4-door passenger car nearly side swiped his patrol car on Deep Cut Lake Road. Deputy Salmon turned around to follow the car.

The car accelerated at a high rate of speed.

The deputy caught up with the car, but the driver refused to stop. The deputy pursued the car at speeds in excess of 80 mph on narrow gravel roads. The pursuit ended on a dead end lane.

The driver, 31-year-old Jemimah Benge of Loogootee, and a back seat passenger were both immediately detained.

During a search of the car, police found more than 10 grams of cocaine, syringes and other drug paraphernalia.

Benge was arrested and taken to the Martin County Jail on charges of dealing cocaine over 10 grams Level 2 felony, possession of cocaine over 10 grams Level 3 felony, maintaining a common nuisance Level 6 felony, possession of a syringe Level 6 felony, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle Level 6 felony, possession of drug paraphernalia Class A misdemeanor, reckless driving Class A misdemeanor. She is being held without bond.

After further investigation, the Martin County Sheriff's Office coordinated with Lawrence County Sheriff's Department's Narcotics Unit and found that there was an active warrant for a third person in the vehicle.

On Friday, Martin County Sheriff Travis Roush, Chief Deputy Josh Greene, Deputy Danny Salmon, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department Detective Chris Roberts, Detective Tyler Trueblood, Captain Andrew Phillips, Officer Andrew Tillette, and Officer Caleb Merriman went to the home of 35-year-old Dale Jones Jr. of Huron.

Jones Jr. was arrested without incident at the home and transported to the Martin County Jail. He is facing charges of dealing cocaine over 10 grams Level 2 felony, possession of cocaine over 10 grams Level 4 felony, possession of a syringe Level 6 felony, possession of drug paraphernalia Class A misdemeanor, visiting a common nuisance Class B misdemeanor, reckless driving Class B misdemeanor and Lawrence County warrants.
