(BLOOMINGTON) - Redevelopment officials approved funding for an initial step toward installing solar panels on city buildings.
The Bloomington Redevelopment Commission unanimously approved a payment of $5,770 in tax-increment financing dollars for structural engineering services.
The Herald Times reports, under the contract Indianapolis-based Silver Creek Engineering will make sure that City Hall and Showers Plaza, at 401 N. Morton St., and the Bloomington Police Department, at 220 E. Third St., all can support the weight of solar panels.
Silver Creek is to report back to the city by August 12.
After receiving the report, staff will initiate a bidding process and bring a second contract to the redevelopment commission for the actual installation of the panels.
The project is expected to cost $779,000 in total. Panels for the police department, expected to cost $99,000, are slated for installation by next year, with $450,000 worth of panels for City Hall and $225,000 in panels for Showers Plaza following later that year or in 2018.
