Picnic In Park To Raise Funds To Rebuild Historic Springville Gym

Last updated on Tuesday, July 26, 2016

(SPRINGVILLE) - On July 19th a fire ravaged the Springville gymnasium built in 1936.

At 12:52 a.m. a Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department firefighter reported heavy black smoke in the area of the Old Springville Gym. Firefighters from Perry, Marshall, Oolitic, Shawswick and Indian Creek VFDs responded along with TOPES.

Perry VFD Chief Max Peters says it took every firefighter and more than 100,000 gallons of water to bring the fire under control.

Officials say there was some insurance, but not enough to replace the beloved historical building.

On Friday the community is hosting a "Picnic In The Park" from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. to raise needed funds. If it rains the event will be held on Saturday.

There will be ribeye sandwich platters which include a ribeye sandwich, 2 sides, a dessert and drinks. A child friendly option will also be available for purchase.

Tickets are on sale now - Advance Adult tickets are $10, $5 for children 10 and under. The day of the event tickets will be $15 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Tickets can be purchased at The Springville General Store or by calling or texting Kim Thompson at (812) 583-8483 or Taylor Thompson at (812) 797-5649.

Those attending will need to bring a blanket and/or chairs for an old fashion picnic in the park.

Donations are greatly appreciated and can be made to The Springville Heritage Group or sent directly to our Go Fund Me page at www.gofundme.com/2fzs2vzw
