Participate In Silent Auction To Support Children Reading

Last updated on Monday, July 18, 2016

(BEDFORD) - Those attending the Lawrence County Fair, slated for July 17-23, can help children learn to read and enjoy books by supporting a silent auction which will raise funds for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program.

The program fosters a love of reading among children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, children become excited about reading. The program insures that every child would have books, regardless of their family's income.

Beth Snead, who represents the local Parton Imagination Library program says the Dollywood Foundation pays for the books, but each county must cover postage costs, which amounts to just more than $25 a year per child. Children who are enrolled in the program from birth until their 5th birthday will receive a book each month. The philosophy behind the program is better readers become better students.

"During peak enrollment, 700-800 children are registered in the program and they receive a free book -- mailed to their homes -- once a month from birth through their fifth birthday," she explained. "The program costs between $15,000-$17,000 at peak enrollment."

The philosophy behind the program is better readers become better students.

"These children will become better readers, better students, most likely attend higher education after graduation, and grow up to be productive members of the community," Sneed added. "It can make our community a better place to live."

Among the vast array of items on the auction block are a one-night stay at the Legend of French Lick, dolls, stuffed animals, Indianapolis Colts memorabilia, watches and jewelry, books, golf and travel packages, pieces of art, automobile accessories, autographed baseballs, and a variety of gift certificates and gift baskets.
