Mark Moore Announces Retirement From IU Health Bloomington Hospital, New President Named

Last updated on Friday, July 8, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - Leaders at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital stood to their feet in praise of Mark Moore as he announced his pending retirement Wednesday morning.

Moore, president of the South Central Region of IU Health since 2002, will retire on Nov. 1. Matthew Bailey, FACHE, chief operating officer for the region, will succeed Moore as president.

"It is hard to imagine how we would have navigated the complex and changing healthcare environment without Mark's steady hand. Our hospital, our community and our region are a far better place because of his integrity, courage and his caring," says Lynn Coyne, chairman of the Bloomington Hospital Board of Directors.

As the outgoing leader, Moore is highly regarded by managers, staff, physicians and colleagues throughout Indiana. His unique ability to drive results and develop trusting relationships has been marked with honesty, caring and insight. He is credited with his leadership during the hospital's merger with IU Health in 2010 and increasing the community's access to primary and specialty care.

Under his leadership, IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians has grown from a dozen to more than 200 physicians and other providers in 18 locations. More recently Moore has been a leader in developing the vision for the new IU Health Bloomington regional campus, schedule to open in 2020.

"Mark's experience, intelligence and commitment to purpose have guided the hospital forward through all these challenges," says Coyne.

IU Health Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Al Gatmaitan, echoes those sentiments.

"I know Mark firmly believes that no one serves by themselves, but he has definitely been a servant leader. You are on the threshold of a new era - something even greater," he said referencing the new campus project. "Mark has positioned IU Health leaders and staff for a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity to better serve our communities."

Coyne says Moore's successor will bring continuity to the robust healthcare region. "Matt Bailey brings to us the next generation of leadership. He is a proven leader and has experience in dealing with the challenges of the future of healthcare."

Bailey has more than 30 years of healthcare leadership experience in community-based hospitals. He joined the South Central Region as chief operating officer in October 2015, after serving as president of IU Health West Hospital for six years. During his tenure, IU Health West Hospital achieved Magnet designation and performed at the highest levels for quality and patient satisfaction. Prior to joining IU Health, he served as president and chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.

Gatmaitan says Bailey is the right choice for the community. "We are thrilled to have Matt lead us on this journey in the region. He can be of great service in helping IU Health get to where we want to be in providing exceptional healthcare choices in Indiana."

Bailey looks at his new post as an opportunity. "I am thrilled to stand before you. I am humbled to lead the region into a new era and I take the responsibility very seriously. I look forward to working shoulder-to-shoulder with you."
