Hemlock Cliffs Trail Area Closed To Camping

Last updated on Monday, July 25, 2016

(BEDFORD) - Camping is not allowed in the Hemlock Cliffs area. This prohibition includes anywhere along or adjacent to the trail system.

An earlier closure order banned camping at the trailhead and parking area, as well as within the large rock shelter at Hemlock Cliffs.

"We continue to hear that this is the most beautiful place in southern Indiana," said District Ranger Chris Zimmer. "We want to keep it that way, and the area is suffering from overuse, the vegetation is being trampled, and vandalism has occurred." Zimmer went on to explain that the Hoosier has an obligation to protect the special biological communities located adjacent to the trail system. He emphasizes that they want to make this area accessible to people to visit while still ensuring the sensitive plant life living in the micro-habitat of the cliffs and ravine are protected from damage. Zimmer said sadly, "People need to stay on the trail. The beauty of the area was being marred with trash and trampled campsites and we had to do something. We were getting complaints from hikers at the number of campers who were ruining the experience of this pristine place."

Parking space at the Hemlock Cliffs Trailhead has always been limited as well, and on busy weekends, vehicles lined the road into Hemlock Cliffs. "This is a day use site," said Zimmer, "no one needs to be staying overnight."

Patrols will be increased to ensure compliance with the new policy. Violators are subject to a citation and $100 fine.

There are other nearby camping opportunities on the Hoosier for people that would like to camp and explore Hemlock Cliffs for a day trip. For instance, Indian Celina Recreation Area offers two camp loops a short distance away.
