City Of Bedford Hires Law Firm To Advise On New Overtime Rules

Last updated on Tuesday, July 26, 2016

(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford has hired the law firm Bose McKinney to advise the city on how to comply with the new overtime guidelines that go into effect later this year.

The new regulations take effect on Dec. 1, 2016. The revised overtime pay regulations, which are estimated to affect at least 4.2 million American workers, will increase the salary threshold for the overtime exemption from $455 a week ($23,600 annually) to $913 a week ($47,476 annually).

City attorney Greg Pittman explained the city has some employees in unique jobs that have been exempt from overtime in the past, but may not be now.

The city has hourly employees who are paid overtime and among salaried employees, some who are exempt and some who are not. Mayor Shawna Girgis say the issue is complicated and Pittman recommended seeking outside legal advice.
