Bloomington Officials Report June 2016 Disinfectant Byproduct Levels

(BLOOMINGTON) - The monthly disinfectant byproduct (DBP) test results for June have been released, and while the figures are lower when compared to the same month one year ago, they indicate an increase in the peak haloacetic acid levels when assessed with the results collected in May of this year.

The June 2016 findings showed the concentration of haloacetic acid levels at the eight locations tested ranged from 49 to 56 parts per billion (ppb) and the trihalomethanes levels were between 53.7 and 71.8 ppb.

The May 2016 findings revealed the concentration of haloacetic acid levels at the eight testing sites ranged from 35 to 40 parts per billion (ppb) and the trihalomethanes levels were between 42.3 and 46.6 ppb.

Both concentrations from June 2016 are within limits set by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, 60 ppb for haloacetic acids and 80 ppb for trihalomethanes.

"While the test results are improved from this time last year, the latest results tell us there is more work to be done. We will keep working on this," said Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton.

Disinfectant byproduct levels are generally higher during the summer and fall, and CBU staff have responded accordingly.

"Modifications have been made to the treatment process in response to the changing lake conditions," said CBU Director Vic Kelson. "Monroe Water Treatment Plant staff are also using feedback gained from laboratory analysis in the ongoing search for ways to reduce organics and optimize our treatment methodology."

"Again, this is an ongoing process," Kelson stated. "We will continue to monitor the situation and develop effective ways to improve water quality."
