(BEDFORD) - A local motocross racer is headed to Loretta Lynn's National Championship Amateur Pro Races in August but he needs your help.

17-year-old Tate Nicholson is the first Bedford motocross racer to qualify for the national competition, according to his parents Sally and Eric Nicholson.

"He has worked hard for this," says Sally. "He had to place in the top 8 at an area qualifying race and then that pushed him into the regional competition where he had to qualify in the top 6, which he did and that led us to the national championship on the Lynn's estate in Tennessee.  It is a very big deal to make it to this race."

But heading to the race is expensive.

"We talked to one racer who went and it cost him more than $3,000 and that doesn't include any parts needed for his bike," Sally added.

So the family is holding a fundraiser Friday from 5 p.m. till 10 p.m. at Reveres Food and Fuel, one of Tate's sponsors.

His other sponsors include, Indiana Army Surplus, Bedford, Body and Paint, Tex-A-Con, Johnny Signs, Performance Refinish Paint and Bryan Staggs of Hubler GM Center.

"During the fundraiser there will be lots of good food and desserts and other great items we will be raffling off," Sally says.

The meal which includes hamburgers and hotdogs, side dishes like pasta salad, dessert and a beverage cost $10 for an adult and $6 for children 12 and under.

Items being raffled off include:

  • An oak cabinet with glass door
  • Free oil change from Bedford Body & Paint
  • Free alignment from Bedford Body & Paint
  • 3 - free Car detailing from Bedford Body & Paint
  • 5 - 31 bags
  • Mary Kay items
  • Indiana Army Surplus items
  • Free Hair Cuts by Julie Sunders/Warthan at the Loft
  • Musical instruments
  • Other items

You can buy raffle tickets during the event or at Bedford Body & Paint from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m.. Tickets cost a $1 each, 7 for $5, 15 for $10 or 30 fro $20.

There will also be whole pies for sale and craft items.

If you can't make the fundraising event you can still donate or become a sponsor by emailing Sally at or stop by Bedford Body & Paint.
