Last updated on Wednesday, July 20, 2016

(BEDFORD) - 7-year-old Lucas May is recovering after being kicked in the chest by a horse at the Lawrence County 4-H Fairgrounds Tuesday morning.

At 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, Seals ambulance and Marion Township Rural Fire Department responded to the emergency. While waiting for a horse and pony show, Lucas was at the family's horse trailer where their horse was tied up. When Lucas walked around the back of the trailer, the horse became spooked and kicked Lucas on the left side of his chest.

According to his father, Greg May, Lucas was knocked to the ground and began complaining of having trouble breathing and pain to his chest.

Lucas was taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital by a Seals ambulance crew and then flown to a Louisville hospital for treatment.

His family is hoping he will be released today.
